If the Power Goes Out, Can You Still Use Your Internet?

It’s a common question, especially during storm season: If my power goes out, will my internet still work?
The short answer is no. The long answer is possibly.

Why internet goes down with power

Even though Central Access fiber is built for reliability, your internet service depends on powered equipment inside your home. This includes your modem/router and the optical network terminal (ONT) that connects your home to our fiber network. When your electricity goes out, that equipment shuts down, so your internet connection does too.

What about the network itself?

Our fiber network is designed with backup power systems in place to keep service running as long as possible during outages. However, without power at your home, your devices can’t connect, even if the network is still active.

Is there a way to stay connected?

If staying online during an outage is important, you do have a few options:

  • Battery backup (UPS): A small uninterruptible power supply can keep your modem and router running for a limited time.
  • Portable generator: Can power your home equipment if used safely.
  • Mobile hotspot: Your cell phone can provide temporary internet access if cellular service is available.

Stay prepared

Power outages can happen at any time, so it’s a good idea to have a plan in place, especially if you work from home or rely on internet for communication.

At Central Access, we’re committed to delivering fast, reliable service, but when the power goes out, your internet will too, unless you have the power backed up.
