Data Privacy Day: Protecting your information in a connected world

Every year on January 28, Data Privacy Day serves as a reminder that our personal information is valuable and worth protecting. From online shopping and banking to social media and streaming, we share data every day, often without thinking twice.

While technology makes life more convenient, it also means being more mindful of how our information is used and protected. The good news? A few simple habits can go a long way toward keeping your data safe and secure.

Simple tips to protect your data:

  • Use strong, unique passwords or pass phrases. Avoid using the same password across multiple accounts and consider a password manager to keep track of them. Consider using phrases like song titles, lyrics, or special phrases that mean something to you.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA). Adding an extra verification step helps protect your accounts. Never blindly accept an MFA request if you did not initiate. If you are getting MFA request like that, someone has your username and password. Sign in to that account and change the password.
  • Keep software up to date. Updates often include important security fixes that help protect against new threats.
  • Be cautious with emails and links. If something looks suspicious or too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Review privacy settings. Take a few minutes to check the privacy settings on your apps and social media accounts.

On this Data Privacy Day, take a moment to review your digital habits and make small changes that can have a big impact. Protecting your data helps protect your identity, your finances and your peace of mind, today and every day.
